About the Program

This 10 day international service learning and travel study to Cuba is incorporated with a partially-online 5 week summer course that looks at the Cuban Revolution in the 21st Century. The course is led by Dr. Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado, University of Nebraska at Omaha Professor of Political Science and Cuba scholar.

Course topics will include U.S. foreign policy toward Cuba, Cuba after the Castros, Cuba’s medical diplomacy, the emergence of the Cuban oil industry, economic market reforms, and sustainable development policy.

Site visits will include Cuban schools and universities, organic farms and bioreserves, and historic Habana Vieja (a UN World Heritage site). In the metropolitan Havana area, we will be working on-site with a local community service organization.
